How to Charge a Toyota AC

How to Charge a Toyota AC

Charging the A/C system on your Toyota car or light truck, through the service ports located on the hard lines, is a common automotive repair. Take precautions to avoid overcharging the system and damaging the compressor by using an A/C gauge set instead of a common charging hose to solve this problem. System capacity information is available in your service manual or online. If repairs to the system have been made, pulling a vacuum on the system is required. This procedure is the act of removing all of the gases and moisture from the system with a vacuum pump.

Install the A/C gauge set on the service ports located on the hard lines under the hood. Locations of the service ports vary and are found by following the lines on the back of the compressor. The larger of the two lines is the low side and leads from the compressor to the evaporator located under the dash. The smaller high side line leads from the compressor to the condenser located in front of the radiator. The service ports are located on these lines. Make sure the valves are closed on the gauge assembly. Attach the blue low side gauge hose to the low side port and the red high side hose to the high side port.

Attach the vacuum pump to the yellow service hose on the gauge set and turn it on. Allow the pump to run for one hour to eliminate all moisture in the system. Pulling a vacuum on the system causes the moisture to boil and turn to vapor so that the vacuum pump can remove it. This allows the moisture to turn to vapor and be eliminated from the system.

Disconnect the yellow service hose from the vacuum pump and re-install the refrigerant can tap on the hose. Insert a can of refrigerant onto the tap and turn the thumbscrew all the way in then all the way out to open the can. Open the blue low side valve on the gauge assembly and fill the system. After the first half a can is installed, start the vehicle and set the a/c controls to max. This will allow the compressor to pull refrigerant into the system. When the required amount of refrigerant has been added, close the valve and turn off the engine. Remove the gauges from the service ports.
