How to Remove a Toyota Camry 2002 Rear Door Handle

How to Remove a Toyota Camry 2002 Rear Door Handle

Toyota redesigned the popular Camry for the 2002 model year, but one issue facing Camry owners remained: the tendency for the outer door handles to break. It can be quite annoying for the car to look brand new except for a single handle that's broken off. A new handle will cost about $50 as of 2010 and about half an hour of your time to install.

Difficulty:
Moderately Challenging

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 10 mm ratchet
    • 1

Put the rear door window in the up position, or the window will get in the way.

    • 2

Remove the interior door panel. This will be the hardest part of the process. The door panel is attached to the door by five screws and two pins located around the panel. The edge of the door that presses against the chassis door frame has two screws; the door handle itself has two more; and there are two more under the light and the mesh that covers the middle of the door. Remove the pins by pressing the screwdriver against them, and they will easily pop out of the door.

    • 3

Slip the screwdriver between the door trim and the door panel. The trim will come off as you slide the screwdriver along the sealed parts.

    • 4

Remove the plastic liner that's against the door. Removing this may reveal a sticky substance that was used to attach the liner. If so, you can replace the liner with an adhesive bought at an auto shop.

    • 5

Remove the bolts that keep the handle in place with a 10 mm ratchet. Three bolts will be visible from the beginning, but there are two others not visible that you'll have to feel for with your hands. Taking off the first three bolts will loosen the handle and removing the final two will let you take off the handle completely.
