How to Install a Stereo in a Toyota Highlander

Installing a stereo in a Toyota Highlander can improve the sound quality and gives you features unavailable from the factory. Swapping out the head unit on a Toyota Highlander is an easy project that requires basic tools and the right parts. Installing a new stereo in the Toyota Highlander takes less than an hour.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • 10mm socket
  • Wiring harness adaptor
  • Toyota radio mounting kit

      Disconnect the negative battery cable and ensure it doesn't contact any metal parts. Place the transmission into the "Drive" position and set the parking brake.

      Remove the trim from around the stereo by prying at one of the bottom corners with your fingers. Apply pressure until the clips disengage and work your way up the trim. Once the trim is free from the dash set it safely aside.

      Locate and remove the six 10mm bolts that hold the stereo in place. Pull the head unit out of the Toyota Highlander dash and disconnect the wires from the back of the radio.

      Connect the wiring harness adaptor to the original harness. Mount the new stereo into the Toyota radio mounting kit and secure it by following the manufacturer's instructions. Plug the wiring harness adaptor and antenna wire into the back of the new stereo.

      Slide the entire stereo assembly into the dash and reconnect the battery cable. Turn the radio on and verify the speakers and controls are working on the new stereo. Secure the stereo in the dash with the six 10mm bolts and replace the trim ring around the radio.
