How to Troubleshoot a 1990 Toyota Pickup Turn Signal

Troubleshooting the front and rear turn signals on your 1990 Toyota pickup is very simple and mainly checks for the two biggest exterior light problems: burned-out bulbs and blown-out fuses. If either of these problems is responsible for your truck's turn signals malfunctioning, the simple solution is to replace them. The 1990 Toyota pickup truck uses 1157-bulbs for the front turn signals and 1156-bulbs for the rear signals. The fuses needed are 15A fuses.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Clean gloves

  1. Turn Signal Bulb (Front)

    • 1

Turn the Toyota truck's engine off and open the hood. Put on the gloves.

    • 2

Remove the four screws above the headlamp assembly with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the headlamp cover. The turn signal bulb is one of the bulbs on the headlamp assembly.

    • 3

Reach behind the headlamp assembly and pull off its electrical connector. Rotate the turn signal bulb socket to the left to remove it.

    • 4

Pull the burned-out bulb out of the socket and install a new bulb in its place. Place the socket back into the assembly and twist it to the right to secure it.

    • 5

Reattach the headlamp cover and reinstall the four screws above the headlamp assembly. Close the hood.

    Turn Signal Bulb (Rear)

    • 1

Turn the Toyota truck's engine off and open the tailgate. Put on the gloves.

    • 2

Remove the two retaining screws on the inner side of the tail lamp assembly. Remove the tail lamp assembly cover.

    • 3

Disconnect the tail lamp assembly's electrical connector. Remove the top socket by rotating it counterclockwise.

    • 4

Pull the bulb out of the socket and install a new bulb into the socket. Place the socket back into the assembly and rotate it clockwise.

    • 5

Reconnect the electrical connector and reattach the headlamp cover. Reinstall the two retaining screws and close the tailgate.

    Fuses

    • 1

Turn the Toyota truck's engine off and open the hood. Put on the gloves.

    • 2

Open the fuse block on the driver's-hand side by removing its cover. Locate the fuses labeled "TAIL LAMP" and "TURN SIGNAL." Inspect the fuses. The metal rod inside of each fuse should be in one solid piece. If it is not, you will have to replace the fuse.

    • 3

Pull the broken fuse out and replace it with a new fuse. Make sure to use a 15A fuse.

    • 4

Place the cover back onto the fuse block and close the hood.
