How to Remove a Toyota Camry 2002 Rear Door Handle

How to Remove a Toyota Camry 2002 Rear Door Handle

Toyota redesigned the popular Camry for the 2002 model year, but one issue facing Camry owners remained: the tendency for the outer door handles to break. It can be quite annoying for the car to look brand new except for a single handle that's broken off. A new handle will cost about $50 as of 2010 and about half an hour of your time to install.

Difficulty:
Moderately Challenging

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 10 mm ratchet
    • 1

Put the rear door window in the up position, or the window will get in the way.

    • 2

Remove the interior door panel. This will be the hardest part of the process. The door panel is attached to the door by five screws and two pins located around the panel. The edge of the door that presses against the chassis door frame has two screws; the door handle itself has two more; and there are two more under the light and the mesh that covers the middle of the door. Remove the pins by pressing the screwdriver against them, and they will easily pop out of the door.

    • 3

Slip the screwdriver between the door trim and the door panel. The trim will come off as you slide the screwdriver along the sealed parts.

    • 4

Remove the plastic liner that's against the door. Removing this may reveal a sticky substance that was used to attach the liner. If so, you can replace the liner with an adhesive bought at an auto shop.

    • 5

Remove the bolts that keep the handle in place with a 10 mm ratchet. Three bolts will be visible from the beginning, but there are two others not visible that you'll have to feel for with your hands. Taking off the first three bolts will loosen the handle and removing the final two will let you take off the handle completely.

How to Repair the 1993 Toyota Corolla Dome Light

How to Repair the 1993 Toyota Corolla Dome Light

The dome light in a Toyota Corolla illuminates the interior of the vehicle when any of the doors are opened. The light also comes on when the doors are unlocked using the keyless entry remote. The dome light mounts in the center of the roof panel on the interior of the vehicle and a clear plastic piece protects the bulb from damage. You need to remove this plastic piece to change out the bulb, which you can find at auto-parts and hardware stores.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement dome light bulb
    • 1

Shift the Corollas's transmission into park and turn off the engine. Set the parking brake.

    • 2

Insert a flat-head screwdriver between the clear plastic dome light cover and the dome light housing. Twist the screwdriver in order to pop off the clear plastic dome light cover, exposing the dome light bulb.

    • 3

Grip the bulb and pull it straight out of its socket. Twisting or rotating is not required; the bulb pulls directly out.

    • 4

Install a new bulb and snap the plastic cover into place. Test the dome light.

How to Remove Toyota Tundra Front Brake Calipers

How to Remove Toyota Tundra Front Brake Calipers

The full-size Toyota pickup started off as the T100 but was eventually renamed the Toyota Tundra. There have been two major redesigns to the truck body over that time, and like any other vehicle, they will need parts fixed or replaced. In the case of the brakes, if you notice a sticky caliper or that your brakes favor one side over the other, chances are the caliper needs to be replaced. The first step is to remove the caliper from the truck.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • Brake line clamps
  • Line wrenches
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
    • 1

Lift up the front of the vehicle using the jack and secure it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is completely secure on the jack stands before you crawl underneath it. Remove the front wheels using the tire iron and place them to the side, out of the workspace.

    • 2

Place the brake line clamp on the rubber brake line then cinch it down to clamp onto the line. This will stop excess brake fluid from leaking--although a little will still come out--and keep spillage to a minimum.

    • 3

Disconnect the brake line from the back caliper using the line wrench. You don't want to use a traditional wrench for this job because the tolerances aren't as tight, and you could round off the corners on the fitting, requiring you to replace the entire line.

    • 4

Unbolt the caliper from the spindle using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and place it to the side. The caliper may stick a little on the rotor because of pressure still in the caliper but, if you need to, pull the caliper towards you, pushing in the caliper a little bit and then pull the caliper off of the brake rotor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow your truck to cool off before you work on the brake calipers. If it's too hot, all of the parts will be hot as well, and you may burn yourself in the process.

How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid in a Toyota Highlander

How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid in a Toyota Highlander

According to Toyota maintenance guidelines, you should change the automatic transmission fluid in your Highlander every 30,000 miles if you use it under normal operating conditions. If you do a lot of towing or hauling, Toyota recommends that you change the automatic transmission fluid every 15,000 miles.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Paper towels
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Container
  • 6mm hex socket
  • 18mm box end socket
  • Filter
  • Gasket
  • Funnel
  • Automatic transmission fluid
  1. Drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid

    • 1

Drive your Toyota Highlander for 10 minutes to warm up the transmission fluid. Park on a level spot. Turn off the engine. Engage the emergency parking brake. Open the hood and secure it using the safety bar.

    • 2

Check the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level and quality. The dipstick is toward the rear of the engine. It is marked ATF Engine Oil. Pull this dipstick out. Wipe it off with a clean paper towel. Look at the fluid on the paper towel. Transmission fluid needs replacing if it is brown. Fresh transmission fluid is translucent red. Replace the dipstick. Pull it out again and look at the level. It should be between the MIN and MAX lines. On certain engines, mostly modified engines, there is no dipstick. This is a closed system. In this case, you will have to proceed with changing the ATF without checking the level and quality.

    • 3

Jack the front of your vehicle up with a floor jack. Use jack stands placed under the lift notch about six inches behind the front wheel well on either side of the vehicle. Lock the jack stands in place by lowering the security bar.

    • 4

Locate the fluid line that connects the transmission to the radiator. Remove it by loosening the clamp with an adjustable wrench and then pulling on the line gently. The ATF will be hot, so be careful that you don't burn yourself. The transmission attaches to the dipstick well. Place the open end of this line into an empty container, such as an engine oil drain pan.

    • 5

Turn on the engine. Make sure that you leave the emergency parking brake engaged. Watch the ATF line for fluid pumping out. Turn off the engine as soon as the flow of ATF stops. Reattach the line to the transmission.

    Install a New Filter

    • 1

Detach the drain pan. You will have to get under the vehicle to do this. You will see a solid plate with bolts all around the edges directly under the transmission. Remove the bolts using a 6mm hex socket. Some additional ATF may spill when you do this. Remember that it will be hot. Peel the gasket from the rim of the drain pan.

    • 2

Remove any debris from the bottom of the drain pan with a clean paper towel. If it is really dirty, you may need to pour a little transmission fluid on it to help remove some of the sludge. Using water to clean the pan is bad, as water will damage the transmission.

    • 3

Look for the 18mm lock nut on the bottom of the transmission filter. This is in opening which became visible when you removed the drain pan. Remove the lock nut using 18mm box end socket. Pull the filter down to remove it.

    • 4

Install a new filter. To do this, you have to slide it into the filter port and tighten the lock nut until it is secure.

    • 5

Position a new gasket on the drain pan rim and position the drain pan under the transmission so you can replace the bolts. Tighten these by hand until all of the bolts are holding the drain pan. Moving in criss cross pattern, tighten the bolts using the 6mm hex socket until they are secure. Keep in mind that over tightening will dent the drain pan.

    • 6

Unlock and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle with the floor jack.

    Refill the Transmission Fluid

    • 1

Locate the Engine specification sticker on the interior of the hood for the ATF specifications and check the ATF specifications. The sticker states the type of ATF (see Resources) and the amount needed for your vehicle. This varies according to year model and engine size. If you are unable to find the sticker, the information is also in the owner's manual.

    • 2

Find the ATF fill port. This is beside the dipstick. Remove the black cap marked ATF or Transmission Engine Oil.

    • 3

Put a funnel into the fill port. Pour the appropriate amount of ATF into the funnel. Check the level again. If it is low, add a little more ATF and recheck.

    • 4

Replace the black cap and tighten it. Close the hood. Start the vehicle and allow it to idle for 10 minutes to circulate the ATF.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you check the ATF level, if it is below the MIN mark, you must have the system serviced. This is a sign that there is a leak.

How to Add Brake Fluid in a Toyota Corolla

How to Add Brake Fluid in a Toyota Corolla

Adding brake fluid to your Toyota Corolla may be necessary if you have replaced a component in the brake system, such as a caliper or master cylinder, because the fluid would have leaked during replacement. Another reason you would have to add brake fluid is if you are performing a brake bleed to flush out the old fluid. Always make sure you keep a sufficient amount of brake fluid in the master cylinder so that air doesn't enter the system.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Brake Fluid
    • 1

Open the hood and prop it up.

    • 2

Twist or open the cap off of the brake master cylinder. The master cylinder is usually located on the driver's-side firewall.

    • 3

Pour brake fluid into master cylinder, up to the "max" line.

    • 4

Replace the cap onto the brake master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal in your car a few times to remove any air in the brake system.

    • 5

      Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure not to overfill the master cylinder as this will cause braking issues.

  • Spilling brake fluid on the paint will damage it.

  • Wear safety glasses when working on your Toyota Corolla.

Troubleshoot Interior Lights in a Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia has two rows of dome lights, two vanity lights and access assistance lights on each door. Problems with interior lights can be caused by several malfunctions. It is not difficult to troubleshoot the problem when you're having trouble with your interior lights.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb
  • Tweezers
    • 1
Filaments meet in a good bulb

Check the bulbs in the interior lights. Use the flathead screwdriver to pry off the plastic cover. Inspect the bulbs to see if they are bad. A bulb can be checked by looking at its filament. The two parts should meet; if they are separated, the bulb is bad. If a few of your interior lights don't work, it could be a bulb problem. If none of them work, it is likely not a bulb problem.

    • 2

Locate the fuse boxes. The Sequoia has two fuse boxes, one on the passenger side floorboard kickpanel and on the driver's side just above the parking brake. Remove the cover and examine the fuses. Use the tweezers to pull out the fuses and check them. The fuses that could affect interior lights are 10A fuses. The filament in a blown fuse will be disconnected.

    • 3

Bring the vehicle to your Toyota dealer, if the other options do not work for you. Your Sequoia very likely has a wiring problem somewhere in the vehicle and wiring problems are very difficult to find. The work is recommended for a professional. The short in the wiring will have to be fixed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not attempt to diagnose any wiring problem on your own.

How to Install a Toyota Highlander Cargo Net

How to Install a Toyota Highlander Cargo Net

The Toyota Highlander offers a large amount of cargo space in the rear of the vehicle. If you frequently transport a large amount of cargo, you may want to secure it to prevent anything from rolling around or getting lost. A cargo net is a good way to keep your contents safe and secure while you are traveling. With a few quick steps, you can connect a cargo net to your Highlander. There are no tools required, and you can purchase a cargo net at most automotive parts and accessories retailers, as well as major department stores with an automotive department.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Cargo net
  • 1

Push the seat buckles of the third row seat down toward the floor to store them out of the way. The hole where the buckle feeds up through the floor is large enough to hold the buckles if you push them straight down into the hole.

  • 2

Run the shoulder belts through the hanger on the inner wall of the vehicle, near the door frames on each side. These hooks are designed to restrain the shoulder belts so they do not get caught anywhere in the cargo area.

  • 3

Grasp the nylon strap loop located in the top center of the seat back. Pull up on the strap and push the headrests forward to fold them flat. Locate the strap on the release lever located on the back of the seat to release the latch securing the seat back in position. Grasp the strap and pull towards the rear of the vehicle. Push the seat back forward to lay it flat once the latch mechanism is released.

  • 4

Unfold the cargo net hooks, which are recessed into the interior trim. There is a hook on each side of the vehicle behind the second row seat, as well as on each side in the very rear of the cargo area. The hooks should simply fold out to access them.

  • 5

Secure the loops of your cargo net into the hooks behind the second row seat first. Stretch the net out to secure the loops on the other side of the net into the hooks near the rear hatch

How to Replace Toyota Avalon Rear Brake Pads

How to Replace Toyota Avalon Rear Brake Pads

The rear brake pads on the Toyota Avalon are vital parts of the braking system. The pads make solid contact with the brake rotors during braking. If the pads are worn or the rotors are damaged, the Avalon's stopping power will be significantly diminished. Toyota recommends that you replace the brake pads every 50,000 miles. Listen for the brake pad wear indicators: their scraping against the rotor will alert you as to when the brake pads are in need of replacement.
