How to Program a New Toyota Corolla Key

How to Program a New Toyota Corolla Key

The Toyota Corolla was introduced to America in 1968 and has grown in popularity over the last several decades. Today, a total of approximately 30 million Toyota Corollas have been sold throughout the world. According to the National Crime Information Center, this popularity has also made the Corolla one of the most stolen vehicles in the United States. To help increase security, newer models of the Corolla feature a key with an integrated electronic fob. New electronic keys must be synchronized or programmed to an individual car before they will operate. You must employ a complex sequence of actions to put the Corolla into programming mode.

Remove the new key from the ignition. Open the driver-side door, with the three other doors closed. Quickly insert the key entirely into the ignition, but do not start the vehicle. Remove the key. Repeat this a second time and remove the key when finished. These two insertions must be done within five seconds.

Close the driver-side door and then open it. Repeat this again. The second time the door is opened, put the key in the ignition without starting the vehicle, then remove it. These steps must be completed in under 40 seconds.

Close and open the driver-side door two times. This time, again put the key into the ignition but do not remove it. Close the door. Rotate the key to the "On" position without starting the car and then back to the "Off" position. Remove the key. This portion must be done in 40 seconds or less. The door locks on the vehicle will go down and then up to indicate that the sequence has been accepted and the key is ready to be programmed.

Push both the "Unlock" and "Lock" buttons on the key fob down at the same time for approximately one and a half seconds. Release the buttons and quickly press the lock button again. Hold it for two seconds. The door locks on the car will lock and then unlock to indicate that programming has succeeded. The key fob is now synchronized with the car computer. Open the driver-side door to end the process.
